Boston: history on every mile
The world's oldest annual marathon is also its most storied. Qualifying alone is a badge of honor, and the course — with its notorious Heartbreak Hill at mile 20 — punishes arrogance and rewards patience. The crowds in Wellesley and Newton carry tired legs further than any gel ever could.
London: one long street party
No race on earth matches London for atmosphere. Tower Bridge at mile 12, with tens of thousands of spectators pressed rail to rail, is the single loudest moment in distance running. It is also the largest annual fundraiser on the planet — a reminder that charity and racing belong together.
Austin: our hometown favorite
We may be biased, but a December morning in Austin is hard to beat: cool air, live music at nearly every mile, and a finish festival with breakfast tacos. The Marigold Mile course borrows the best of the big-city playbook — closed roads, pace groups, roaring cheer zones — and adds something the majors can't: every entry funds weekend meal packs for local schoolchildren.
How to pick your next race
- Match the course to your strengths. Flat and fast for a personal best; hilly and scenic for an adventure.
- Consider the season. Cool-weather races in late fall and early winter are kindest to first-timers.
- Run for something bigger. Charity entries turn the hard miles into meaningful ones — ask any Marigold Mile finisher.
Wherever you race next, train with a plan, respect the distance, and save something for the final 10K. The finish line will still be there — and it is always worth it.
